Hutchinson Andrew Trio

Hutchinson Andrew Trio

Since coming together in 2004, the Hutchinson Andrew Trio has become a regular fixture on the Western Canadian jazz scene. The Trio is comprised of three-time Western Canadian Music Award-nominated bassist Kodi Hutchinson, CBC Galaxie Rising Star pianist Chris Andrew, and Downbeat Award-winning drummer Karl Schwonik. They have performed for enthusiastic crowds across Canada at events such as the Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton, Victoria and Medicine Hat Jazz Festivals as well as the mainstage at the Montreal International Jazz Festival where they won the 2013 TD Grand Jazz Award. They have been recorded live by CBC Radio, and have been nominated for all three of their albums for a Western Canadian Music Award for Outstanding Jazz Album with ‘Prairie Modern’ (2013), ‘Music Box’ (2008), and ‘Lost but not forgotten’ (2006).

The Hutchinson Andrew Trio's music can be categorized as contemporary acoustic jazz, and represents where they come from; the serenity and beauty of the Prairies and Rocky Mountains, alongside the excitement of the vibrant and growing young cities of the Canadian West. They mix elements such as contemporary swing, latin, and acoustic groove to help form their own sound. Kodi and Chris list artists such as Robert Glasper, Brad Mehldau, Aaron Parks, David Kikoski, and Kenny Werner as some of their influences. This distinctive musical voice earned their 2013 release ‘Prairie Modern’ an Editor's Pick review from Downbeat magazine.
